To be detected, a patch code must be:

horizontal with the bars parallel to the leading edge of the document (fed into the scanner first).

located at least 0.25inches from the right, left, and leading edges of the image.

no more than 3.75 inches from the leading edge of the image.

located at least 0.25 inches from any other printed information.
Patch codes can appear on a data image or on a separate document such as a batch separator sheet.
