Shaded areas on an image are rectangular areas made up of a pattern of black speckles. You can remove shaded areas from an image with the deshade feature. The deshade process removes the speckles that make up the shaded areas while preserving the text inside the shaded areas.

  1. From the Configure Scanner Settings | Kofax Options tab, click Deshade. The Deshade Properties window appears.
  2. To activate shade detection, in the Detection section, select the Enable check box.
  3. To activate shade removal, in the Removal section, select the Enable check box and set the following properties for this feature:

    Option

    Description

    Minimum Width of Area (pixels)

Enter the minimum width of a shaded area to remove.

    Minimum Height of Area (pixels)

Enter the minimum height of a shaded area to remove.

    Maximum Speckle Width (pixels)

Enter the maximum horizontal speckle size to remove.

    Maximum Speckle Height (pixels)

Enter the maximum vertical speckle size to remove.

    Speckle Width Compensation (pixels)

If a speckle is larger than the Maximum Speckle Width value, then this number of pixels is added to the Maximum Speckle Width and the size of the speckle is checked again. If it does not exceed the size of the combined Maximum Speckle Width and Speckle Width Compensation, then the speckle is deleted.

    Speckle Height Compensation (pixels)

If a speckle is larger than the Maximum Speckle Height value, then this number of pixels is added to the Maximum Speckle Height and the size of the speckle is checked again. If it does not exceed the size of the combined Maximum Speckle Height and Speckle Width Height, then the speckle is deleted.

  4. Click OK.
