Audio Formats

The following are examples of audio formats, each of which have a codec:

  • AAC

  • MP3

  • PCM

  • WAV

  • SPEEX

Bit Rate

Refers to the number of audio/video bits sent or received in a given unit of time. Video and audio are captured and stored digitally at specific intervals (frames per second for video, sampling frequency for audio).

Encoder

A computer application that can take an uncompressed video or audio feed and compress it to a standard format.

File Formats

The following are examples of file formats that are used as containers for video and audio data:

  • MPEG

  • MP4

  • Matroska

  • FLV

HTTP Protocols

The following are examples of protocols that are based on the HTTP protocol to stream data to clients:

  • HLS

  • HDS

  • Smooth Streaming

  • DASH

Live

Content that is viewed in near real-time to when the live event occurs.

Network Protocols

The following are examples of network protocols that send video and audio:

  • RTP

  • RTSP

  • RTCP

  • RTMP

Player

A software control that decodes video and audio for viewers.

Publisher

The entity that manages or coordinates video publishing.

Resolution

Resolution is the width in pixels (x lines of pixels) of the video. Examples of resolution rates include 360p, 480p 720p and 1080p (with the p standing for pixels). Low media resolution may use 500kbps bitrate, while 720p and 1080p could use 2Mbps bitrates or more. Higher bitrates require more storage and more bandwidth to play back.

Video-On-Demand (VOD)

Content that was previously recorded. This content can be searched on and viewed.
