The Log Viewer lets you easily read log files or snapshots that are saved from the Diagnostics Console or created by the Diagnostics Service.

Logs that are saved as XML or JSON can be opened in the Log Viewer, which displays the log in an easy-to-read format that resembles the Diagnostics Console interface. The Log Viewer is especially helpful for reading log files created by the Diagnostics Service.

Note:

The Log Viewer can display both XML and JSON log files. Other file types cannot be opened in the Log Viewer.

If you created a shortcut to the Diagnostics Console on your desktop, you can drag and drop log files from your file system onto the shortcut icon. The Log Viewer automatically opens and displays the log.

If the Diagnostics Console or Log Viewer are already open, you can drag-and-drop a log file into the Diagnostic Console or Log Viewer window to display the log in the Log Viewer.

To open a log file from the Diagnostics Console:

  1. Select Open from the File menu or press Ctrl+O. The Open Diagnostics File dialog box is displayed.
  2. Browse to the location where you saved the log file. The default location is the last directory from which you opened a log file.
  3. Select the log file.
  4. Click Open. The log file is displayed in the Log Viewer.
    Note:

Only data for enabled tabs is displayed when viewing a log file. If you are viewing an exported snapshot, only tabs that contain data are displayed when the snapshot is viewed.

To open a log file directly from the Log Viewer:

  5. Select Open from the File menu of the Log Viewer or click Open File from the main toolbar of the Log Viewer, or press Ctrl+O.

To open a long file in a new Log Viewer window, select Open in New Window from the File menu of the Log Viewer or click Open in New Window from the main toolbar of the Log Viewer, or press Ctrl+Shift+O.

The Open Diagnostics File dialog box is displayed.

  6. Browse to the location where you saved the log file. The default location is the last directory from which you opened a log file.
  7. Select the log file.
  8. Click Open. The log file is displayed.
    Note:

Only data for enabled tabs is displayed when viewing a log file. If you are viewing an exported snapshot, only tabs that contain data are displayed when the snapshot is viewed.
