When the HL7 module records an assigning authority for an MRN or appointment ID, it checks whether the assigning authority is already configured. If not, it adds the assigning authority to OnBase Configuration.1

When an assigning authority is created by the HL7 module, the assigning authority's HL7 code is also used as its friendly name. The friendly name is the value displayed for the assigning authority in the OnBase Patient Window and other user-facing contexts.

You can configure assigning authorities to use a friendly name other than the HL7 code. However, this approach requires additional configuration and maintenance. To configure friendly names for assigning authorities, you must do the following:

  • Configure assigning authorities before using them in production. See Configuring Assigning Authorities.

  • Configure a translation table to translate assigning authority HL7 codes to their friendly names. See Creating HL7 Translation Tables.

  • Configure message templates to use the assigning authority translation table. See Assigning Translation Tables to Fields.

  • If you want to use the friendly name as a keyword value, configure the assigning authority Keyword Type with a maximum length of as many characters as are required for your friendly names.

1 This behavior applies to the following message actions: Appointment Processor, Medical Records Chart, Merge into AutoFill Keyword Sets and Documents, Patient Record Processor, and Scripted Merge Processor.
