OnBase uses chart data field mapping to extract patient and account information from HL7 messages. This mapping is configured at a system-wide level under Medical | Charts | Data Fields. To configure mapping at a template level, you must use chart field overrides.

For example, chart field overrides may be necessary if your system has multiple HL7 sending applications that place patient information in different message fields. Chart field overrides are also necessary if you are using a translation table to translate values before they are used for chart creation. When used with a translation table, the chart field override ensures that the translated value is used to apply the correct information to the chart. For more information about translation tables, see Translation Tables.

Note:

If a message contains a value in both the chart override field and the default chart data field, the value in the chart override field is used. The value in the default chart data field is ignored.

To configure a chart field override:

  1. Create a copy of the message template you want to customize, as described under Copying Message Templates.
  2. From the new template, replace the segment containing the field you want to override with a copy, as described under Replacing an Original Segment with a Copy.
  3. Select the segment that you assigned to the template, and then click Fields.
  4. Select the field and click Settings. The HL7 Field Settings dialog box is displayed.
  5. From Chart Field Override, select the chart metadata field that you want to map to this HL7 field.
  6. Click Save.
