Under Data Format, select the encoding method used to express document file data as ASCII. Because HL7 requires all data be expressed in ASCII, a binary file (for example) would have to be converted to ASCII before being embedded in an HL7 message.
Note:
If the resulting ASCII data contains any special characters, such as control characters defined by the message, these characters must also be encoded using standard HL7 substitutions. See section 2.9 of the HL7 specification.
