When an HL7 message cannot be processed, the HL7 Listener logs the message and error information to the hl7failedmessages.txt file. By default, this file resides at the root of the C drive on the server running the HL7 Listener. If the Client running the Listener has the -HL7FAILEDMESSAGES="pathname" Command Line Switch applied, then the report file is created in the specified location.
This log is never truncated by OnBase. It must be maintained manually to prevent it from growing too large. Clear the log of old messages on a regular basis, taking care to preserve messages that still need to be resolved.
For each failure, the following information is logged:
-
Date, time, result, and description of the failure
-
List of processors that tried to process the HL7 message and whether any succeeded
-
The failed HL7 message in its entirety
This log contains the entire contents of failed HL7 messages, which may include confidential patient data. Ensure access to the HL7 failed message log is restricted to protect the confidentiality of patient information.
