With the proper configuration of COLD, DIP, or Scan Processing Queues you can configure OnBase to send HL7 messages. When OnBase is a Sender of HL7 messages, other systems can listen for and capture the HL7 messages to use for their own purposes (such as patient administration or payment posting).

Ensure that you have configured message templates and HL7 Destination parameters prior to configuring COLD, DIP, or Scan Queues to trigger HL7 message sending.

Note:

COLD and DIP processes send HL7 messages after indexing, but prior to commit. If messages should only be sent after commit, do not configure HL7 process settings at the COLD or DIP level. Instead use OnBase Workflow to configure an action to send HL7 messages. For scan queues, you can change the trigger event as described under Scan Queue Configuration for HL7 Trigger Events.

  1. In OnBase Configuration, select one of the following:
    • Import | COLD or Import | Document Import Processor. Select the appropriate process and click HL7 Configuration.

    • Import | Scan Queues. Select the appropriate Scan Queue and click HL7 Configuration.

The HL7 Process Settings dialog box is displayed.

  2. From the Document Type drop-down, select a Document Type to associate with an outbound HL7 message. Only Document Types assigned to the process or scan queue are available.
    Note:

When a Document Type is removed from a COLD/DIP process or Scan Queue, the HL7 process settings for that Document Type are automatically removed.

  3. Select the template for the Message Type to be sent.
    • OnBase will take the Keyword Type values from the document and place them in the selected template.

    • Keyword Types are mapped to HL7 fields through message template configuration.

  4. Select a Destination. If the correct destination is not available, configure it as described under Export Destination Configuration.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Repeat steps 2–5 for any remaining Document Types assigned to the process.

You can have multiple Document Types, Message Types, and Destinations assigned to one process. For example, if a COLD process contains three Document Types—Patient Admission Form, Pathology Report, and Billing Information Form—you can assign each Document Type its own HL7 Message Type and its appropriate Destination.

    Tip:

To remove an item from the configuration, select it and click Remove.

  7. When finished, click Close to exit the HL7 Process Settings dialog box.
  8. If you are configuring a scan queue, continue to the following procedure.
