The Document Update Processor can be configured to send documents to a specific Workflow life cycle by enabling the Add Document to Workflow option and selecting a life cycle from the Life Cycle drop-down list.
If only the Add Document to Workflow option is enabled:

The documents are added to the initial queue of the selected life cycle.

No system work is executed. A Workflow timer must be configured to initiate system work on the documents.
If the Add Document to Workflow option and the Re-Index Document options are enabled:

Documents are re-indexed before they are sent to the selected life cycle.

Documents are sent to the life cycle even if re-indexing fails, as long as the $$DOCNUMBER provides a valid document handle.
