The chart merge process supports the concept of moving an MRN to a different MPI. This process allows the original MPI to remain in the database along with the new MPI.

Consider an example where John Smith has two different accounts: MRN 11 and MRN 22. When MRN 22 was created, it was incorrectly filed under the wrong MPI. While MRN 11 is filed under MPI 1, MRN 22 is filed under MPI 3.
