The message containing the merge information must satisfy the following requirements:

The MRN in the MRG segment must exactly match the MRN in PID segment (including assigning authority, if used).

The MPI on the MRN in OnBase must be different from the MPI specified in the message's PID segment.

The message's MRG segment must not contain an MPI value; otherwise, HL7 will attempt to perform a merge on both the MRN and MPI.
