Merge processing requires patient records and documents to be updated. For example, following an MPI merge, the documents from the patient's old MPI need to be updated with the new MPI value. If the new MPI has different patient information from the old MPI, then the documents also need to inherit the new patient information.
While a Scripted Merge Processor or Medical Records Chart message action can update patient demographic information on an MPI, MRN, or chart, these updates are limited to the MPI, MRN, or chart specified in the PID segment of the HL7 message. When the HL7 Listener is run, it automatically creates additional import processes in order to ensure patient information is consistent across all records and documents.
The following topics provide advice and information about updating patient information following a merge.
These topics describe guidelines for a typical installation. Different organizations may have different requirements depending on their business processes.
