The following diagrams illustrate the expected behavior for merging records when MRNs are not unique. In this scenario, the John Smith has two MRNs at a facility: 11 and 22. Each MRN is attached to a different MPI: 1 and 2.

MPI 2 and MRN 22 are redundant and need to be removed. However, the system has two instances of MRN 22: one for John Smith and one for Jane Doe.

When OnBase is configured for overlapping MRNs, the Medical Records Chart message action can use the assigning authority values in the HL7 merge message to merge the correct MRN 22 into MRN 11.
