The third step is to install the Foundation EP1 version of the Web and Application Servers on additional servers. Both the version 16 and Foundation EP1 Web and Application Servers will be connected to the Foundation EP1 database at the same time.

Users can connect to the new Web Server deployment by using a new URL pointing to the Foundation EP1 Web Server. Other users can continue to connect to the version 16 Web Server by accessing the existing URL for that server.

If a user encounters an error that prevents the use of the Foundation EP1 Web Server, the user can simply use the URL for the functioning version 16 Web Server. The ability to immediately switch from the upgrade version back to the legacy version reduces the risk of possible down time and impact to the business.

As an example, some organizations did not observe serious issues in testing and did not plan for the possibility of undetected issues occurring in production, which ultimately prevented users from being able to access the upgraded Web Servers. When these upgrades were performed without a parallel Web and Application Server, significant downtime was experienced.
