A key concept of the OnBase platform is that the database is designed to be forward compatible. Each release may add new tables and columns to the OnBase database, but it will not remove any existing tables or columns. Default values will be assigned to new fields. Older versions of the software can connect to a newer database, because the older software ignores unrecognized tables and columns.
Older OnBase Clients cannot make use of new features, but they also will not compromise the integrity of the database schema or interfere with the functionality of users on upgraded software.
Caution must be exercised on the administrative side to ensure new features in the Configuration module are not enabled during the upgrade. Enabling new features may interfere with users still on an older version of the OnBase Client, preventing the software from performing as expected.
