Tagged definitions use tags to identify the location of an area, record group, or column data. Tags are characters or labels that provide a point of reference to define where these items are located. An item's location is identified relative to the end of the tag string.
For example, the End of Area may be on the same line as the text Company Totals:. With this configuration, the process searches for records up to and including the line containing the text Company Totals:.
Non-tagged definitions use specified coordinates to locate information. For example, the Start of Area may be defined as line 7, meaning that the area starts on the seventh line from the top of the page.
When deciding whether to use a tagged or non-tagged definition, use the following guidelines:
-
Use a tagged definition if the item may be in a different position on each page, but the item is always in the same position relative to a tag, such as the word TOTALS.
-
Use a non-tagged definition if the item starts always on the same line relative to its parent definition (the page, area, or record group). For example, the Record Group definition is relative to the Start of Area definition. If the record group always starts on the third line in the area, use a non-tagged definition.
