If you do not automatically load an Object Definition File (.odf) on startup (Config | Editor Options…), you need to load the file into the Designer manually to modify and test it. Before importing or editing an existing .odf file, you need to open the statement layout file (.smt).

If you have enabled the option to load a layout file on start up automatically, there are two methods for loading an .smt file:

  1. Launch the Statement Composition executable by double-clicking its icon.
  2. Then go to File | Open and navigate to the .smt file you want to open.

After the .smt file is open and you do not have the option enabled to automatically load an object file, there are two methods of loading and unloading an Object Definition File, from the object toolbar or from the object menu.

  3. Click the Import object definitions button on the ODF toolbar, or click the Objects menu and select Import definition file...
  4. On the Open dialog box, the Files of type should be Object definition files (*.odf). Navigate to the Object Definition File, highlight the file name, and click Open.
  5. The Current object definition tree window is displayed. This is a read-only view of the entire, expanded object tree. Click OK. The file loads into the Designer.

When you are finished with an object file, you will generally click the Save and close or Close without saving icon. The object file remains loaded in the Designer for use in designing the statement layout. You may want to unload the object definitions to work with another .odf file. As with loading, you can unload a file using the object toolbar or the object menu.

  6. Click the Unload object definitions button on the ODF toolbar, or click the Options menu and select Unload object definitions.
  7. Click Yes on the Confirm operation message box to unload the file. Click No to keep the file loaded and return to the Designer.
