Specify character-stripping Options that will be applied to the identified text when a cross-reference is initiated. How the options are applied depends on the technique used to identify text.
Text is identified for cross-referencing using either of the following two methods:
-
Highlighting the desired characters
As soon as the text is highlighted and the left-mouse button is released, a drop-down menu appears, and Cross-Reference can be selected.
-
Double-clicking on the desired text
Identified text is defined by the position of the cursor when double-clicking is initiated.
(Double-clicking automatically initiates the cross-reference.)
How much of the text is identified is determined by the Select Method.
With Block Select Method, the system scans in the right and left directions for text from the cursor position, and selects all text up to the point where a space is detected. Spaces to the right and left of the double-click position act as delimiters for the identified text. Space and Character Stripping options will only be applied to the identified portion of text, not the entire line.
-
If a Line Select Method is set, the system identifies the entire line. Space and Character Stripping options are applied to the line, as a whole.
If a Column Select Method is set, the system identifies the character in the column that was double-clicked, and scans to the left and right of the character, until a space is detected, in the same manner as a Block Select Method.
Note:Although the column is highlighted on the display, only the double-click characters identified in the right/left directions are identified for cross-referencing.
-
Single Space Continue tells the system that the identified text may contain a space that should be retained when using that value for matching. Single Space Continue only accounts for continuation to the right of the identified text.
-
Keep All Characters tells the system to use all characters within the identified text when retrieving cross-referenced Document Types.
-
Strip Spaces tells the system that the identified text may contain a blank character, which appears as a space. If a space is detected, it will be removed, and the entire identified region will be viewed as one string.
-
Strip Character tells the system to ignore a character in the highlighted text. Type the character to ignore in the Strip Character field. For example, type a - into the field to omit hyphens from the string used for matching.
-
Strip Characters from Beginning tells the system to ignore one or more characters at the beginning of a Keyword Value. To define how many characters are to be ignored, type the number of characters into the Strip Characters from Beginning field.
-
Strip Characters from End tells the system to ignore characters at the end of a Keyword Value. To define how many characters are to be ignored, type the number of characters into the Strip Characters from End field.
When character stripping from the beginning or end is applied to a text selection, the selected characters are evaluated against the cross-referenced Keyword Type's Data Type, and only valid characters are considered for stripping. For example, when text is cross-referenced to a numeric Keyword Type and Strip Characters from Beginning is selected, the text selection "aaa11111" will begin stripping characters at the "1." The alpha characters "aaa" will not be considered for stripping.
If desired, the text search can be restricted to only Document Types with certain Keyword Types. To do so, follow the instructions for Configuring a Keyword Cross-Reference. (Multiple Keyword Types can be used to further restrict the criteria for cross-referencing.)
