The Cross-Reference Compatibility charts beginning on Source: Text Document demonstrate the relationship between source-destination document file types and the linking mechanisms that can be used.

A cross-reference can be configured to use any one of four types of linking mechanisms to identify related documents. Linking mechanisms are based on the document from which the cross-reference will be initiated.

The four Linking Mechanisms are as follows:

  • Keyword - can be used to configure cross-references from Image, Text, OLE, or HTML Forms based on Document Types on all supported platforms.

  • Text - can be used to configure cross-references from Text-based Document Types.

  • Image - can be used to configure cross-references from Image-based Document Types.

  • Template - can be used to configure cross-references from Text-based Document Types.

Note:

Within the Linking mechanism, there are also options available based on the documents that will be retrieved from the initiated Cross-Reference (destination documents). For example, if the destination document is text, a cross-reference based on a text search is possible, even if the source document is image-based.
