Microsoft's Event Viewer application maintains a record of all events logged by the operating system in one of three categories:

  • System events

  • Application events

  • Security events

These logs can be very useful in the event of server problems related to the operating system, hardware, applications, etc. By examining specific times just prior to the occurrence of problems, one can view if the Windows operating system recorded information leading to the cause of such problems.

To access the Windows Event Viewer:

  1. On the server, right-click on My Computer.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Expand Event Viewer and highlight the appropriate log.
  4. The contents of the log will display with the most recent event at the top.
