Problem

Upgrade fails, and you receive an error message when you try to upgrade BizTalk Server 2009\2006 R2 to BizTalk Server 2016\2010\2013 by double-clicking Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016\2010\2013.msi: “To install Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016\2010\2013, run Setup.exe”.

Cause

This issue occurs when you try to upgrade BizTalk Server 2009\2006 R2 to BizTalk Server 2016\2010\2013 by double-clicking Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016\2010\2013.msi.

Resolution

You can perform a BizTalk Server upgrade only by running the Setup.exe. You cannot upgrade BizTalk Server by running an .msi file that is provided in the BizTalk Server product DVD because, in addition to updating BizTalk Server binaries, files and registries, the upgrade process requires Setup.exe to do the following:

  1. Verify and install BizTalk Server prerequisites.
  2. Upgrade BizTalk Server databases.
  3. Clear components from an existing version of BizTalk Server and install BizTalk Server components.
  4. Reconfigure BizTalk Server features.

We recommend that you read the Upgrading to BizTalk Server 2010 from BizTalk Server 2009/2006 R2 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=191321) before you begin to upgrade BizTalk Server.
