The time rule determines the retention period. To create a simple policy that includes an event and a time rule, complete the following steps.

1. Create a retention policy.
2. Perform one of the following actions, depending on the type of policy you want to create.

   Situation	Steps
   Create a simple policy based on time and event	Create an event rule. Set the retention period.

   Create a simple policy based on time	Create a time rule. Set the retention period.

3. Optional. Create an event rule for cutoff states.
4. Optional. Add approvers.
5. Optional. Protect a simple policy.
6. Assign document types to a policy.
7. To review the options you set for the policy, in the Details column, click the Summary tab.
8. Activate a policy.
   After you activate a policy, it becomes available to assign to record categories in File Plan Designer.
